CanSMOF Inc. is pleased to announce the award of two scholarships to attend SMOFCon 31 in Toronto this coming December. Jenni Merrifield of Port Moody, British Columbia and Pablo M.A Vazquez III of Austin, Texas will each receive C$500 to help defray the cost of attending SMOFCon.
"Selecting only two scholarship recipients out of the field of applicants was a challenge," according to CanSMOF Scholarship Committee member Kevin Standlee, who evaluated applications along with Robbie Bourget and Terry Fong. "There were many worthy applicants, and I'm sorry we could only pick two of them for the grants to go to Toronto. I hope Jenni and Pablo both learn things and help share their knowledge and experience with the other members of SMOFCon."
"SMOF" stands for "Secret Masters of Fandom," a humourous term for people who organize science fiction and fantasy conventions. SMOFCon is the annual convention about organizing science fiction and fantasy conventions. It has been held in different cities around the world, usually in early December, since 1984. The site of each SMOFCon is determined by the members of the previous year's event.
SMOFCon 31 will be in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, December 6-8, 2013. For information about this year's SMOFCon, see http://www.smofcon31.org/. For information about SMOFCon in general, see http://smofcon.com/.
SMOFcon is an annual convention for those that organize science fiction conventions. The first SMOFcon took place in 1984. This is the second time that Smofcon has been held in Canada. Previously it was held in Toronto in 1989.
SMOFcon typically attracts 100-150 attendees, and usually occurs in the first weekend of December, though other dates have been known. The content includes formal and informal sessions covering insights from events held in the previous year, information about the latest trends from the community and external experts, reviews of previous events and feedback to bidders for upcoming events, with a focus on learnings that can be widely shared. A significant number of SMOFcon attendees are also Worldcon organizers and the programme usually includes sessions about the most recent Worldcon and on bids for future Worldcons. Programming for early arrivals has recently involved intensive workshops in aspects of conrunning and this trend will be continued at Smofcon 31. Hospitality and networking is also a large part of the Smofcon experience.
The name of the convention is derived from the word SMOF (also spelled smof), which is an acronym which stands for "Secret Master(s) Of Fandom" and is a term used within the science fiction fan community. Its coining is generally attributed to science fiction author Jack L. Chalker and it is intended to be tongue in cheek.
